Jesse Letain emerges with his iPhone 6

With pre-orders at record levels, early indication was that Apple’s new iPhone 6 models were going to be a hit. And it looks like it is as the lineups at Apple Stores around the world are proving once again that Apple still has a lot of magic left in it.

And such was the case at Edmonton’s Southgate Centre where the first people to line up arrived at the doors of the Apple Store almost 24 hours before.

Lu Li

“I got here at 10 AM (Thursday) and there was no one here yet,” says first arrival Lu Li, who plans on getting the iPhone 6 Plus 64GB.

“It’s also good timing,” says Li for his parents, visiting from China, who were there in line with him and were also planning on getting the same larger screen model when the store opens as the latest iPhone will not be available in their country until a later date.

Li, who current owns an iPhone 5S, plans on using the larger sized model in lieu of any other devices. “I can do everything on the iPhone…it’s enough for me.”

I guess that size does matter.  A number of people queued up had their eyes on the iPhone 6 Plus (and interestingly enough, the 64GB model), citing the larger screen size and battery life.  These two features were very important to Paul who was charging up his Samsung Galaxy Nexus he had in his hand.

“It’s the first time Apple is making it (this big) and I’ve never had an iPhone before,” says Paul, “And I wanted to try something different.”

Southgate Lineup 2

The crowd was getting so big that security decided to continue the line outside the door. One customer, who arrived at 9 PM Thursday evening, commented that the size of the lineup when he arrived was already larger than the lineup a year ago for the previous iPhone release at 6 AM, two hours prior to the store’s opening.

While the Li family was still working on their purchase, Jesse Letain (top photo), who arrived at 4 AM and one of the first to emerge with his prized possession, had reserved his iPhone 6 on-line.

There were no obvious unboxings going on outside the store for everyone to see. Perhaps they heard about the poor guy in Perth Australia who dropped his iPhone 6 and painfully had it tumble to the ground during his media interview.

Hopefully there will be enough iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones for everyone who is still in line.
